Awhile back, Gmail introduced a new user interface, part of which included a new inbox tab feature.

By default, every Gmail account will have these three tabs active:

Google then employs various algorithms (and probably AI) to automatically determine which tab an incoming email should fall under.

As we discovered, crafting your emails so they land in the primary tab for Gmail can drastically affect open rates.

The Most Important Lesson of Building and Running My Own SaaS Startup

Before MailDB, I built a SaaS product called Navilytics.

Navilytics was a web analytics tool. Much like Google Analytics, it provided insight to your website visitors.

It went much further though than the standard tools in that it would show you what visitors actually did on your website via recordings, heatmaps, scrollmaps, and more. This was done by tracking all user actions - every mouse movement, click, keypress, and scroll. This data was then used to create the playbacks, heatmaps, and so on.

I spent close to a year developing it from start to finish, ensuring the platform and code worked flawlessly. Needless to say, I thought the technology was awesome and couldn't wait to announce to the world that Navilytics was finally done and ready to use.

Unfortunately though, I had some naive ideas about SaaS that ultimately led to me having to sell it.

This post is not about how successful it was, but rather, how I learned the most important lesson from its failure.

We're happy to announce that the MailDB blog is now live!

With this being our first post, we thought it would be a good idea to give a bit of an introduction to MailDB and our plans going forward.

So, what is MailDB Anyway?

MailDB is a web application that makes it easy to find the email address of any professional on the web.

You might have tried to find email addresses before by browsing a company's website, Googling different combinations and filters, or even emailing a random guess with the hope that it doesn't bounce. Hours can be wasted day in and day out due to this process of email discovery.

We hope to change how email discovery works.
